Every year, someone somewhere tries to outdo the others by coming up with a bigger, taller, brighter and stranger Christmas tree.
The Christmas tree actually predates Christianity by centuries and historians believe it was adopted during Emperor Constantine’s reign to combine Christmas with the pagan celebration.
When you think about it, Christmas has nothing to do with trees; it’s about the cross. As much as people would like to buy into the commercialism of the season, the reason Christian have something to celebrate isn’t so much about the birth of Jesus Christ but rather, His death. According to The History of Christianity, there was considerable uncertainty about the true date and most Eastern churches settled for Jan 6. The West chose Dec 25. Historians, however date the actual birth to be some time in July.Today modern Christian takes the Christmas tree to be symbolic of eternal life and the star on top, representative of the Star of David.
As long as I know, Christmas isn’t celebrated to a plant but to commemorate Jesus birth, that’s what really counts.
